Chili and Bannock Lunch

On October 20th, AIDS Programs South Saskatchewan held a chili and bannock lunch. The lunch was well-attended by people in the community who came out to enjoy a delicious lunch and show their support for AIDS Programs South Saskatchewan and the United Way of Regina. The lunch was organized and provided by the staff at AIDS Programs South Saskatchewan.

AIDS Programs South Saskatchewan (APSS) helps men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS and those at risk of contracting HIV. They are a community based non-profit registered charitable organization. Together with their partners, they strive to raise awareness about the issues that people living with HIV/AIDS deal with every day including the grassroots problems of poverty, hunger, homelessness, discrimination and stigma associated with HIV/AIDS.

From the heart

Today was the Indian Residential Schools Adjudication Secretariat (IRSAS) GCWCC kickoff event that took place in the building of 1870 Albert St. There were approximately  30 people in attendance. Speakers included: Susan from the United Way, Kevin Orban from Diabetes, Dana Folkersen from REACH.

Kudos to all of the speakers who did a great job talking about their organization and the campaign. Also thanks Brenda for highlighting the executive committees role  in supporting the campaign.

The picture above is the GCWCC planning committee at the IRSAS. Michael spoke from the heart and was very inspiring while he was encouraging his co-workers to donate. The IRSAS raised approx $23,000 last year and this year their goal is $24,000.

Canada Revenue Agency launches

Today was the kickoff event for the Canada Revenue Agency. The event was held in the basement of the Knox Metropolitan church where breakfast & drinks were provided. There were over 50 people in attendance.

Sheila Nixon kicked off the event and followed was Susan Ross, Joanne Grant, and Debra McDonald who works at the Early Childhood Intervention Centre. All of the presentations were embracing as each speaker touched on how and why they choose to support the GCWCC.

To finalize the event the 2 chairs proceeded in doing trivia with the audience. The trivia started with questions about Regina and then leaned towards last year’s GCWCC results. Example: How many TSO staff donated in last year’s campaign, what is the average donation, etc. They did a fantastic job on educating the audience and setting the bar higher for this year’s campaign.

The CRA goal this year is $40,000.00!

Marci Brown - Next Chapter Book Club Coordinator

The Faces of Community Change

The Regina and District Association for Community Living was founded in 1952 by parents with a vision of inclusion for their children with intellectual disabilities. Rejecting the bygone practice of institutionalization, they work to weave everyone into the rich fabric of our community.

Part of their programming includes the Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC). It was created to provide the same community opportunities for people with special needs. Made popular by celebrities like Oprah, book clubs have become trendy forums for social gatherings filled with lively dialogue, attracting people from different backgrounds who share common interests and a love of reading.

Each group is comprised of between five and eight people. The small size ensures that each participant feels valued, and facilitates the development of strong friendships between members. Anyone may join the club, regardless of reading level and abilities. Club members take on active roles: together they decide which books to read and how they would like to structure their hour-long get-togethers. All meetings are held in local settings, such as a book store or coffee house.
